Lessons learned:
1. I can’t consider the book as a flow without losing detail and emphasis. Scenes are my friends and they take time to think up individually in order to get the most out of them.

2. The process of creating characters is one I need to look at more closely. If I don’t like the character and find them fascinating, then what’s the point? I like everyman (and everywoman) characters who turn out to be amazing, but I like them to be amazing all along too.

3. Sometimes more writing advice is too much advice. It bogs me down the more there is.

4. Details are easier to convey than scale, and more effective too a lot of the time.

5. Talking about writing is fun, but it spoils the actual writing.

There are probably more. I’ll get onto them later.

It occurs to me though that starting from a position of strength never gets novels done.

Let me explain. If I start out thinking I’m hot stuff and can easily put the book together I end up being slow and/or failing altogether.

So this time I’m gonna try to keep my ego in check, even knock it down if possible. I find books fun to write, but they are by no means easy to write.

Basically, I’m a tired college student, and to get any work done at all I need to suspend some project. Maberry pages are just practice, so they get the short straw here.

I’m pretty pleased with how the experience has worked though. Even in two weeks I feel a little more free from my inhibitions for writing. I need to get more reading in, but editing is taking precedence.

Through the broken window at the back of the ancient bank Iwen made out the stream. She crept closer, careful that her long sleeves didn’t catch on any of the protruding shards of wood or stone or metal that reached out from the walls like fingers. She peered out the back window cautiously. If there were other creatures around, they might not be friendly. Humans living under Anai protection so often took their safety for granted. Iwen had to be more careful than that.
The waters of the stream ran pale, and reeds around the water’s edge waved with a breeze from the north. That same wind touched Iwen’s face, whistling over broken glass. What could have done this to an Anai Bank? This area seemed peaceful, but Loka hadn’t mentioned tracking it after it moved on. He’d been clear to say the creature, the force, whatever it was, was still here. If it survived the battle it must have been too weary or injured to move on.
Iwen slipped away from the window and turned back to the front of the bank. Broken tiles and shattered countertops scattered debris through the room. In all the time she’d worked with Sakasi-Hayu Bank, Iwen had never seen such destruction dealt to any Anai structure. Whatever had come through here had done so with power she didn’t understand. She shivered, almost wishing she had a venture partner, even if it meant splitting the pay.
